Barcelona Gothic Quarter with colourful buildings

Spain

Barcelona

Sun, street art, and £1 tapas — one of Europe's best cities for students.

Why Barcelona?

Barcelona is one of the most popular first-trip destinations for UK students — and for good reason. Cheap flights from most UK airports, warm weather for most of the year, incredible architecture, and a food scene that works on a student budget. The city is walkable, well-connected by metro, and packed with free things to do.

Highlights

Sagrada Família

Book online to skip the queue. Student tickets are around £22.

Gothic Quarter

Free to wander — narrow medieval streets, street musicians, and hidden plazas.

La Boqueria Market

Fresh fruit cups for £1–2. Best visited before noon to avoid crowds.

Barceloneta Beach

A 10-minute walk from the centre. Bring your own towel and snacks to save.

Park Güell

Free areas are just as impressive. The paid zone is £8.50 with a student card.

El Born neighbourhood

Great for cheap tapas, vintage shops, and the Picasso Museum (free on Thursdays after 5pm).

Getting there

Direct flights from London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Bristol — often under £30 one-way with Ryanair or easyJet if booked 4–6 weeks ahead. Barcelona El Prat airport connects to the centre via the Aerobus (£6.50 return) in about 35 minutes. Read our cheap flights guide for more booking tips.

Where to stay

Hostels in the Eixample or El Born area are the sweet spot — central, safe, and around £17–25/night for a dorm bed. Look at Generator Barcelona, Casa Gracia, or Sant Jordi Hostels for reliable options with good social vibes. See our hostel tips for how to choose the right one.
