Hostel Tips for First-Time Travellers

·

Staying in a hostel for the first time can feel daunting. But once you know what to expect, it's one of the best parts of travelling — cheap, social, and surprisingly comfortable. Here's everything you need to know.

1. How to pick the right hostel

Use Hostelworld as your main booking platform — the reviews are detailed and you can filter by atmosphere (social, quiet, party). Look for hostels with:

  • A rating above 8.0 on Hostelworld
  • A common room or bar (great for meeting people)
  • Free Wi-Fi and lockers included
  • A central location or good transport links

Read the most recent reviews — a hostel that was great two years ago might have changed management. Sort by "newest first" for the real picture.

2. Dorm size matters

Smaller dorms (4–6 beds) are quieter and more comfortable. Larger dorms (8–12 beds) are cheaper but noisier. If you're a light sleeper, spend the extra £3–5/night for a smaller room — it's worth it.

3. What to pack for hostels

For a full breakdown, check our packing list. But the hostel essentials are:

  • Padlock — most hostels provide lockers but not locks. Bring a combination padlock.
  • Earplugs + eye mask — non-negotiable. Someone will snore.
  • Quick-dry towel — some hostels charge for towel hire. A microfibre towel packs small.
  • Flip-flops — for shared showers. Trust us on this one.
  • Power bank — outlets near beds are rare. Charge your phone during the day.
  • Dry bag or packing cubes — keeps your stuff organised in a shared space.

4. Hostel etiquette

A few unwritten rules that'll make everyone's stay better:

  • Don't turn on the main light after 10pm — use your phone torch.
  • Pack your bag the night before if you have an early checkout.
  • Keep valuables in your locker, not under your pillow.
  • Be friendly in common areas — most people are in the same boat as you.
  • Clean up after yourself in the kitchen.

5. Meeting people

This is the best part. Most hostels run free walking tours, pub crawls, or communal dinners. Join one on your first night — it's the fastest way to make friends. Even just sitting in the common room with a book is enough to start a conversation.

6. Booking tips

  • Book 2–4 weeks ahead for popular cities in summer.
  • Check cancellation policies — free cancellation up to 24–48 hours is standard.
  • Compare Hostelworld, Booking.com, and the hostel's own website — direct bookings sometimes offer a discount.
  • If you're travelling in a group, a private room in a hostel can be cheaper than separate hotel rooms.
