Why Berlin?
Berlin is one of the most affordable capital cities in western Europe — and one of the most interesting. It's a city shaped by history, bursting with creativity, and incredibly welcoming to young travellers. The food scene is diverse and cheap, the nightlife is legendary, and there's enough free stuff to fill a week without spending a penny on activities. Direct flights from most UK airports are frequent and affordable.
Highlights
Brandenburg Gate
Berlin's most iconic landmark. Free to visit, best at sunset when the crowds thin out.
East Side Gallery
The longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall — 1.3 km of street art. Completely free.
Museum Island
Five world-class museums on one island. Student tickets from £7. Free on the first Sunday of the month.
Mauerpark flea market
Sunday only. Vintage clothes, vinyl records, street food, and a legendary outdoor karaoke session.
Tiergarten
Berlin's Central Park equivalent. Huge, green, and perfect for a free afternoon of wandering.
Kreuzberg
The coolest neighbourhood — Turkish food markets, canal-side bars, and street art everywhere.
Getting there
Direct flights from London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Birmingham — often £20–45 one-way with Ryanair, easyJet, or Eurowings. Berlin Brandenburg airport connects to the centre via the FEX express train or S-Bahn (about 30 minutes, £3.50). Our cheap flights guide has more booking strategies.
Where to stay
Berlin hostels are excellent value — dorm beds from £12–22/night. Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain are the best areas for young travellers (central, lively, well-connected). Try Wombat's City Hostel, Generator Berlin Mitte, or Circus Hostel for reliable options. Check our hostel tips for choosing the right one.
