Why Rome?
Rome is one of those cities that lives up to the hype. Two thousand years of history sit alongside buzzing trattorias, gelato shops, and vibrant street life. It's more affordable than you'd expect — especially if you eat where locals eat and take advantage of the many free sights. The city is walkable, the weather is gorgeous, and the food alone is worth the flight.
Highlights
Colosseum
Book online for £14 (includes Roman Forum + Palatine Hill). Free first Sunday of the month.
Vatican Museums
£15 entry, free last Sunday of the month. Go early or late to avoid the worst queues.
Trastevere
The most charming neighbourhood — cobbled streets, ivy-covered buildings, and the best trattorias.
Pantheon
One of the best-preserved Roman buildings. Free entry. The oculus (open roof) is mesmerising.
Trevi Fountain
Visit at sunrise for photos without crowds. Toss a coin — tradition says you'll return to Rome.
Testaccio
The local foodie neighbourhood. Street food market, traditional Roman cuisine, and zero tourists.
Getting there
Direct flights from London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Bristol — often £25–50 one-way with Ryanair, easyJet, or Wizz Air. Fiumicino airport connects to Roma Termini via the Leonardo Express train (£12, 32 minutes) or regional train (£7, 45 minutes). Ciampino airport is closer — bus to Termini for £5. Our cheap flights guide has more booking strategies.
Where to stay
Hostels near Termini station or in Trastevere offer the best mix of price and location. Dorm beds run £17–28/night. Try The Yellow, Generator Rome, or Alessandro Palace for social hostels with good reviews. Trastevere is more charming but slightly pricier. Check our hostel tips for choosing the right one.
